The first incident, during the early part of Friday evening, concerned a report from a member of the public of a boat on fire off Dumpton, Broadstairs following which the Coastguard contacted Ramsgate RNLI’s Launching Authority. As he could clearly see the area of the reported incident from his home he told the Coastguard that he was unable to see any boat on fire and suggested that maybe the person had seen and been confused by the large amount of exhaust smoke coming from the Ostend ferry currently off the coast and heading to Ramsgate.

After further discussion between the Coastguard and the person making the report the Coastguard again requested the launch of the lifeboat and the crew were paged at 7.10pm. However, just after the inshore lifeboat, the Atlantic 75 class Bob Turnbull, was launched and about to leave the harbour it was recalled by the Coastguard who had confirmed the sighted fire was, in fact, the ferry exhaust.

The second call of the weekend was at 12.45am on Sunday when the RNLI station’s all weather lifeboat, the Trent class Esme Anderson, was launched to assist a 35ft. yacht with a failed engine some 2 miles off Broadstairs. On arrival at the scene the lifeboat crew found that the yacht’s crew had managed to restart its engine but as it again almost immediately failed they took the yacht in tow and brought it and its crew safely into Ramsgate Harbour.
