Yacht-re-floated-by-Margate-RNLI-lifeboats-after-grounding-on-rocks

Byline: Margate RNLI’s inshore and all-weather lifeboats were in action earlier today (Sunday 1 September) after a yacht ran aground on rocks at Foreness Point.
Page Content: The alarm was raised shortly after 4am when the 10 metre yacht, with two persons on board and on passage from Ramsgate to Rochester contacted coastguards at Dover reporting they had grounded on rocks at Foreness Point, two miles east of Margate. Both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats from Margate were tasked to assist.

The inshore lifeboat was first to arrive and confirmed that the yacht had grounded on one of two outfall pipes at Foreness Point. A tow line was connected to the yacht to prevent it from being driven further ashore and the tow was transferred to the all-weather lifeboat once it arrived. The yacht was re-floated on the rising tide and once in deep water the situation was assessed. As the yacht was taking in water from suspected hull damage it was decided to tow it to Ramsgate harbour.

On arrival at Ramsgate, arrangements were made for the yacht to be lifted out of the water onto the quay. Both of the yacht’s occupants were unharmed following their ordeal.

Peter Barker, deputy launching authority Margate lifeboat said: “The prompt arrival of both lifeboats meant the situation could be recovered and the yacht and its occupants saved. The rocks at Foreness Point are particularly dangerous and vessels can soon founder if assistance is not provided quickly”
