Kayaker-rescue-at-Margate-sends-important-safety-message

Byline: The rescue of a kayaker by Margate’s RNLI inshore lifeboat has drawn attention to the potential dangers of this increasingly popular pastime, sending out a message that could save lives.
Page Content: The alert was raised just after midday today (20 March) when a member of the public alerted coastguards at Dover to what appeared to be someone in difficulties in the sea off Westbrook Bay Margate. An object was seen floating nearby.

Margate’s inshore lifeboat was tasked and quickly arrived on scene where they located a man in the sea close to his kayak. He was taken on board the lifeboat and immediately taken back to the lifeboat station where he was handed over to the care of the South East Coast Ambulance Service. He was taken to QEQM Hospital at Margate suffering from suspected hypothermia. The lifeboat returned to the scene but was unable to find the kayak which is thought to have sunk.

The RNLI is currently carrying out research into the increasing number of kayak incidents, revealing some important early findings. Guy Addington, RNLI Divisional Sea Safety Manager, who was also a member of the lifeboat crew on this occasion said: “The RNLI have found that 90% of incidents involving kayakers were reported by people ashore. Drawing attention to your plight if you enter the sea from your craft is absolutely vital and we urge people to carry some form of communication, either a marine VHF radio or even a mobile phone in a watertight bag. It is also vital that this should be kept on your person and not located within the kayak itself”
