Two-very-different-rescues-by-Ramsgates-lifeboats

Byline: Each of Ramsgate RNLI’s lifeboats have been out on a service in the last few days – two very different length services which demonstrate that volunteer crew members can expect anything when they respond to their pagers.
Page Content: The first of these calls was Saturday 5th. April at 1.45pm when the inshore lifeboat  was called out to assist a yacht trying to enter Ramsgate Harbour. The crew on the 22ft. yacht had been unable to start its outboard engine after the starter rope parted. In a choppy sea and breezy weather conditions the lifeboat took the yacht in tow and brought it and its crew safely and quickly onto a berth in the harbour.

The lifeboat crew were again called out at 2.55pm on Wednesday, 9th. April for what became a rather lengthy call when the launch of the all-weather lifeboat was requested by Dover Coastguard following a report of a motor boat with engine trouble. The position given for the 32ft. motor boat, with two people on board, was 18 nautical miles from Ramsgate but on arrival at that location there was no sight of the stricken vessel. The lifeboat then continued to an updated position obtained by Dover Coastguard, which was some considerable distance away, and where the motor boat was found.

One of the RNLI lifeboat crew members was transferred to the casualty to assist with attaching the tow rope and check that everything was alright on board. Once the tow had been attached and having compared distances to both Dover and Ramsgate, the lifeboat towed the casualty and her crew to Dover which was nearer.

On safe arrival at Dover Harbour the tow was released, the lifeboat crew member transferred back and the casualty handed over to a Dover Pilot vessel for escorting to a berth. The lifeboat then returned to Ramsgate, arriving at 6.30pm.
