Ramsgate-RNLIs-Easter-weekend-launches

Byline: Both Ramsgate RNLI’s all-weather (AWB) and inshore (ILB) lifeboats were called out over the Easter period to assist vessels in difficulty.
Page Content: The first launch was at 2.05pm on Maundy Thursday, 17th. April, when the AWB was called out to assist a 14m. Belgian yacht with engine failure that was attempting to enter Ramsgate Harbour. The yacht was met 3 miles east of Ramsgate where the lifeboat took it in tow and brought it and its 3 crew members safely into the harbour.

The RNLI’s volunteer crew’s pagers next went off again at 9.39am on Saturday,19th. April when the ILB was launched to a yacht with electrical and mechanical power failure which had earlier run aground in the harbour entrance when trying to enter on a falling tide. After an initial attempt to free the yacht by the harbour staff failed the yacht’s crew put down their anchor to await the rising tide but as the tide made the anchor dragged and in the 15 knot north easterly wind the yacht quickly drifted towards the port’s No.2 berth. With no yacht radio due to the electrics failure the Port Control noticed the danger and called out the ILB which reached the yacht when only metres away from going under the steelwork at the berth. The ILB crew got a line aboard the yacht and safely towed it and its crew into the harbour.
