Criccieth-lifeboat-rescues-porpoise-calf

Byline: Volunteer crew members from Criccieth’s RNLI lifeboat station assisted in the rescue of a young porpoise calf whilst out on exercise on Sunday the 13th of July 2014.
Page Content: The station’s Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, Doris Joan, was taking part in scheduled training when beach patrol officers from Gwynedd Council’s maritime unit contacted HM Coastguard requesting assistance.  The calf had become separated from its mother and was beached on Black Rock sands by the time the lifeboat arrived.  Two lifeboat crew members entered the water and walked ashore before taking the calf on-board the lifeboat.

Once safely on-board, the lifeboat proceeded towards the area where its mother had last been spotted and placed back into the water.  The lifeboat retreated to a safe distance and watched the calf swim away.
