Rescued-fisherman-returns-to-say-thank-you-to-Margate-RNLI

Byline: An Essex based sports fisherman has visited Margate’s RNLI lifeboat station to thank the volunteer crew, part of a multi-agency operation that air-lifted him from his charter angling boat after he was taken ill.
Page Content: Jim Jones from Chelmsford does not remember anything about the rescue operation, one moment he was enjoying a day’s fishing in the Thames estuary (20 August), the next he woke up in hospital in Ashford. When Jim was taken ill, Margate’s RNLI all-weather lifeboat along with an RAF Sea King helicopter from Wattisham airfield were called in to assist. After two first aid trained lifeboat crewmembers (one also a local paramedic) along with the helicopter winchman assessed his condition, it was decided to evacuate him by helicopter to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. He was later released and has made a full recovery.

Recently Jim, along with his wife and daughter visited the lifeboat station to meet the crew and thank them for their part in the rescue. He also donated the fee for the trip which the boat owner waived, to the RNLI. He and his family were shown over the lifeboat and met the crew, including some who were called out that day. Jim’s daughter Melanie is also now raising funds for the RNLI, taking part in a run around Loch Ness.

Nick Smith, deputy launching authority Margate lifeboat said: “We usually lose touch with people who we are able to assist so it was particularly nice to meet Mr Jones in more amiable circumstances and we are pleased he has made a full recovery. It is rewarding for the volunteer crew to be appreciated for the work they do”
