Margate-RNLIs-busy-spell-continues-with-three-call-in-one-day

Byline: The current busy spell for Margate’s RNLI lifeboat crews continues with three calls in one day ranging from a disabled yacht in blustery conditions to four people pinned against the harbour wall in an inflatable.
Page Content: The first call came during the afternoon (Monday 6 July) when a 27ft yacht with two people on board contacted coastguards at Dover asking for assistance. They were around four miles off Margate when their engine failed and they were struggling to make headway by sail in blustery conditions. The all-weather lifeboat was tasked and once on scene a lifeboatman was put on board the yacht to assist the crew in stowing the sails and connecting a towline. The yacht was towed to the safety of Ramsgate harbour.

Around the same time the inshore lifeboat, together with Margate’s RNLI lifeguards were called out to investigate a report of a jet-ski possibly in difficulties around two miles off the main sands. The situation was quickly resolved and during its return journey the inshore lifeboat came across four people in an inflatable dinghy pinned against the outside of the harbour wall at Margate. They indicated they needed assistance and all four were taken aboard the lifeboat and landed safely on the main sands.

Nick Smith, Deputy Launching Authority Margate lifeboat said: “We are experiencing a busy spell with eight calls in less than a week. We are particularly grateful to our volunteer crews and their employers who allow them the time to provide this valuable community service. In their way they are part of the team that helps save lives at sea.”
