The volunteer crew of the RNLI’s Sheerness inshore lifeboat Eleanor launched at 2.33pm on Monday 7 September to reports of a single occupancy hovercraft with mechanical failure in the River Medway off Kingsnorth.

The ILB was quickly on scene in the reported area but the crew could find no sign of the craft, so an extended search was made and the hovercraft was eventually located off Motney Hill near to Otterham Quay.

The male pilot of the hovercraft was taken on board the ILB and the broken down craft was taken in tow.

Sheerness lifeboat coxswain Robin Castle said: ‘Due to tidal restraints and the instability of the hovercraft, very slow progress was possible. The craft and its occupant eventually landed at Gillingham Strand at 6.32pm.’

The ILB was back on station at 7.37pm
